Artist Statement
As an artist I am interested in materiality. The squelching, rough, dry, or wetness of a material, the way in which it can be manipulated and altered to become something it was never intended to be. My artwork is often personal and comes from a place of deep reflection. I like to describe my artwork as self-portraiture, each pieces I create links to myself personally. From a childhood memory to a familiar landscape.
My recent practice manifests in a personal conflict between a love of growing and art. With a familial connection to the reclaimed land of south Lincolnshire, I have always been surrounded by soil and its potential. Most recently I have been creating sculptural pieces with connections to the landscapes I grew up around. The pieces concern a return to the soil. Displayed to the public through a narrative of photography and sculptural self-portraits. My practice resonates with my research on land art and abstract geology, focusing on how one’s mind and the earth are in a constant state of erosion and change.
